best of new york fall fashion week

Toronto Fashion Week is quickly approaching and I'm getting so excited! To hold us over until then, I thought I would share what I deem the best of New York Fashion Week with you. I tried to narrow it down as much as possible but this is the best I could do; I love them all too much!

up and coming couturier

Toronto based Amanda Lew Kee has got it going on, and that's why she's my latest obsession. A 2010 Ryerson graduate, she is the school's first student to attend fashion week so early after graduation. And for good reason! Her fall 2010 collection paid homage to rocker-chic style, with plenty of timeless black leatherwork. As for spring, she suitably designed ready to wear cotton ensembles with an achromatic hue, perfect for pairing with bright accessories. The collection is available at Jacflash and is certain to be a success. Keep this designer on your radar for I see a bright future ahead.

spring inspirations

Spring is such a lovely time of year, I'd have to say it's right on par with my feelings for summer, but in a different sort of way.

Spring!

It's a time for new beginnings. A time when fuzzy buds come out of hiding on magnolia branches, and birds chirp as loud and far as the wind can carry.

This season, I'm feeling a sense of nostalgia for the years I never lived. I want to shop at thrift stores more often and wear copious amounts of vintage jewelry. I want to wear soft, buttery, neutral hues, and add a punch to the soul with compelling shoes and bright colors. Here's my spring 2011 style inspiration board...

Along with helping my closet evolve, I'm also looking forward to reading a few books that are being released this spring. In contrast to my style cravings, I want to explore debut novelists. I'm usually so caught up with memoirs and classic literature that I'm curious to read the new stuff. And in light of spring, I think it's quite appropriate to show support to budding authors while I'm at it!

Nina-Marie Gardner's novel Sherry & Narcotics is set to be released by Future Fiction London in May. Karl Friedrich's novel Wings: A Novel of World War II Flygirls will be released in April by McBooks Press. And Brian Cartwright's Losing the Light is released this month by Atlatl Press. If you're interested in their synopsis, check them out at Goodreads.

Do-it-yourself projects are always fun and they're bound to invoke of a sense of pride and accomplishment; these are perfect feelings to embrace in the springtime. As I was browsing one of my most adored blogs, The Decorista, I came across a project that I must do. There are often times that I'll visit a thrift shop and overlook certain staple pieces because their current state is so unappealing. But a little glossy paint can go a long way. Below is a transformation that inspires me to transform my living space.

book review: a million little pieces

My review of A Million Little Pieces is not affected by the controversy that James Frey may not have actually experienced all of the events in this book, and that they were just fabricated tales.

The vivid imagery and the unique way of his recounting his life only points to the fact that this is an intelligent man, an intelligent man that was severely trapped in addiction and alcoholism. It is raw and it is real and I liked that. The specific detail of certain happenings is impressive, which has probably led some to think he falsified the stories. But the truth is that he has experienced intense turmoil throughout his life and he has chosen to expose it to the world; this should be applauded. My emotions ride the wave of his words in this book. I sympathize with his resistance to "the only way that works for everyone" in terms of recovery. I too believe that there may be many different ways in which we all fight our demons and dreadful desires. This memoir allows me to view addicts and alcoholics in a new light, and I appreciate that.

If some of the events do not check out in terms of accuracy, well so be it, our memory is never entirely accurate anyway, and who's to say how he interpreted them. Now on to My Friend Leonard...

landscape melodies

I'd jump at the chance to go on a road trip anytime, anywhere; I absolutely cherish them. Perhaps that stems from the many journey's I went on as a child with my family, or possibly from my partially innate solitude nature, either way, I can't live without them.

Throughout my life I've always created playlists for my travels and I continuously title them "landscape songs," "landscape music," etc. There's just something about a certain melody in a song that belongs in a car on the road, whilst looking out into the vast emptiness of farm fields or grandeur mountainous terrain.

I listened to the following song on repeat for who knows how long, while I robotically drove through Iowa. Enjoy!

the city that never sleeps

Thank you all for being so patient with me! I know I haven't posted anything in a few weeks but that's because I was in the middle of an immense transition.

My fiancé and I cheerfully escaped winter this year, down in the fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada. As spring started to slowly approach in the north, we made our way back to Canada by way of a road trip in our old school Cadillac that we purchased down there. It was so exhilarating to drive across the country and it was much more undemanding than we both expected. We're ready to do it again!

I now know the ins and outs of Las Vegas, so if you plan to take a trip down there feel free to send me an email for recommendations.

I'm back in Ontario with plenty of internet connections so check back for more timely posts!
